Each step brought her further and further from her home. She could no longer see it when she turned around. If she wanted to, she could still go back. No one would shame her if, at the least minute, she changed her mind. She would be welcomed back warmly, and all would be forgotten. Her ill-begotten journey never spoken of again.
But she couldn’t. Even if she wanted to return, even if no one would ever speak of it again, she knew that everyone would still remember it; it would never fully be erased from anyone’s mind.
She had started this journey, and she would end it.
