Summary: Alanna wasn't sure that Loki was quite the person he said he was.

Nights in the desert were cold. Even under her blanket, Alanna could feel the chill of the night air. Sighing, she pulled it closer around herself. She had come to the desert because it was supposed to be hot, not because she wanted to relive freezing childhood memories in Trebond.

At least there was adventure here, even if it wasn't exactly in the form she had been planning on. Glancing over at Loki's sleeping form, she frowned. The man was bizarre to say the least. He was clearly a member of Scanra's nobility, but other than that, she had no idea what to make of him. It seemed like he had magic of some sort, but he had yet to make any attempt to use it. Perhaps it was simply a result of his memory loss, but she wasn't even sure if he was actually suffering from it. There was a deep seated wrongness about him, a mix of the feelings she had gotten from the Ysandir and from Roger. Maybe it was just her own paranoia and guilt left over from her encounters with the duke, and she was projecting it onto the odd man she had met in the desert who resembled him.

Or maybe, there really was something wrong with him. More than anything, Alanna wished that she had George and his Sight. He would be able to tell her if there was something really wrong with Loki, or if he was the amnesic, mild-mannered man he presented himself as.

"Are you alright, Alanna?" Loki asked.

Alanna jumped as he spoke. He hadn't moved at all, even his eyes were still closed. "No," she said, "I'm fine."

"Would you like for me to take over your watch?" he asked, his voice the same mild, polite tone as ever. It was hard to believe that he had been sleeping only a few minutes ago, and Alanna wondered if he actually had been.

"No," she told him. "You've already had your turn."

"It's fine," he said. "I'm not particularly tired."

"No, you should sleep," she said. "We have a long day ahead."

"Very well." He fell silent, and Alanna wondered if he was really asleep or it just faking it.

Shuddering, she turned away from him. Picking him up in the desert had been a bad idea, but there had been no where to send him, and as a knight of the land, she couldn't just leave him behind. There was something unnerving about him, something that made her skin crawl. Coram had already told her that he didn’t like the man. He didn’t really like anything odd, but Alanna was willing to use that as justification in this case.

Loki was an odd man, that she knew, and she would figure out who he really was. For now, she would just watch him, but in the end, she would get him. If he was really like Duke Roger, she would get rid of him.
