Summary: Sheriff Phillips pays a midnight visit.

It’s almost midnight when Sheriff Phillips when pounds on Margaret Astley’s door, but the full moon provides as much light as the noon sun. It takes her a few moments to open the door, but when she does, it is obvious that she has not been sleeping.

“Hello, Sheriff,” she says, a touch of dryness to her voice. Phillips has not known her for long, but he learned quickly that Miss Astley always speaks with some sort of dry, sardonic tone that makes it clear that she does not care about what anyone has to say to her. “It’s a bit late isn’t it?”

“I’m sorry about the time,” he says, “but I’m afraid this couldn’t wait.”

“Oh? What is it that you have come to ask me?”

“I need to know where your brother is. Sam Drawell has been killed, and James is the prime suspect.”

Her lips part a little to form a small ‘o’ of surprise, but she quickly covers it up. “I’m afraid I don’t know where James is.”

There is no attempt to deny that her brother could have murdered a man, but she is lying to him none the less.

Phillips hasn’t been in this town long, but he knows that James Astley is the sort of man he hates, and Margaret Astley is working her way onto a list of women that he hates.

It doesn’t matter though. He’ll find, and hang, James Astley with or without his sister’s help.

“Goodnight then, Miss,” he says with a nod of his head and a smile as fake as her words.
