Prompt: One Time Only, Brother/Sister
Bonus? Y
Word Count: 297
Rating: T
Original/Fandom: original
Pairings (if any) none
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con etc): none
Summary: She actually means it this time.

James winces as Margaret continues to clean the scrape on his cheek. It wasn’t nearly as bad as some of the other injuries that Margaret had already cleaned, but she had been gentler with those ones.

“Remember James, this is the only time that I’m doing this for you.”

“What? You’d turn away your own dying brother?” he asks her in mock concern. She had fed him lines like that before, but whenever he shows up with holes in him, she opens the door, patches him up, and sends him on his way.

“I actually mean it this time. I have no problem overlooking your less than legal form of employment, but other people aren’t as willing as I am.” She glances over at the guns sitting on the table.

He snorts. “Margaret, we’re out west. No one cares if I’m a gunslinger or gamble too much or anything like that. Hell, some people are relieved when I show up.”

“That’s not true anymore. Sheriff Phillips had a few words with me after the last time you showed up. He doesn’t want you around anymore.”

“I can take care of him if you want.”

“And then we’d both be run out of town. The sheriff is a very popular man.”

“What do you want me to do then?” he asks as she finishes bandaging his wound.

“Have you considered a change of employment?”

“What? Do you want me to be a cowboy?”

Margaret laughs harshly at that. “Well,” she says, “I am a school teacher.”

James smiles weakly at her words. Standing up, he walks over to the table and picks up his guns. “Well. I guess I’ll see you around.”

“I guess so.”

With a final wave to his sister, James walks out of her house.

Oh, is this set in the Old West? I LOVE it! I love that time period so much and especially stories based on it. I can totally imagine the two characters, how he shows up injured and how his sister takes care of him. Maybe he should consider being a cowboy, huh? I love the difference between them; he's doing things he shouldn't be doing while she's a school teacher; could they be more different? Yet they seem to be so close as they're brother and sister. Beautiful dynamic, and great story!
