Ariel trailed her hand along the edge of the mirror. It was tucked into the back corner of her grotto, even more hidden than the rest of her treasures. This was the only one she did not want to share with her friends. It was selfish of her, but she wanted this one all to herself.
And she was afraid of what someone else might see. As much as she loved Flounder, as much as she loved her sisters, she could not risk them seeing what she saw, not yet at least.
Because when she looked into the mirror she was not a mermaid.
She was a human girl.
And behind her was her daddy, happiness and approval mingling on his face.
Somehow this mirror knew just what she desperately wanted and showed it to her, and she had to keep coming back to it because there was no other way she could see her desires come to fruition.
It was humanity or her daddy, not both. Never both.
